Development of Christian Personality

“Personality” is from a Latin word “persona”. It means mask worn by an actor by which he reveals his action and speech. Every human being is a unique person. The person and his personality can not be separated. The deeds and words of a person reveal what the person is. It is the inborn desire of a human person to have fullness of life, i.e. “Full Personality”. To achieve this fullness of personality, is a life long process – from the time of a new born baby to the last time in his old age.

The factors which pattern personality development:

  1. Heredity.  If one is strong in practicing Christianity, his children are naturally inclined to that.
  1. Environment. House, school, society, friends, books, media etc. play a great role in molding one’s personality. If God is welcome in these environments, our personality will be religiously developed and strong.
  1. Decision. A follower of Christ always leads a life according to the attitude of Christ, Who says “ I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life” (Jn. 14, 6). His personality will grow based on this doctrine of Christ. So, his decision will be according to the Wisdom and Grace of God, and it will reveal his Christian personality.
  1. Acceptance and adjustments.  Human adjustment is a never ending process of dealing with unhappy situations and frustrations. When we accept and adjust ourselves to these unhappy situations and frustrations as Christ accepted His sufferings as the Will of God, it has a profound impact on our Christian personality ( Mk. 14, 36).

Parents should encourage and help their children for the growth of their personality. Let us, therefore, try to give them Christian discipline from their early childhood onwards so that they may develop their personality based on our faith and morals.
