February 2013 Bulletin

Bulletin Vol. V111 # 2

Date: February 1, 2013

This year Great Lent begins in the midnight on Pethrutha Sunday – February 10th, followed by Ash Monday- on February 11th.  Lent is the season which runs from Ash Monday until the Holy Qurbana on Easter exclusive. In the season of Great Lent, we should be aware of two things: 1. Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence. 2. Need of Prayer and Penance.

  1. Lenten Regulations on Fast & Abstinence: The law of fasting binds persons from the day after their 18th birthday to the day after their 59th birth day. The law of fasting allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking light food in other two times of the day. The full meal may be taken in the evening instead of midday. The drinking of ordinary liquids does not break the fast. The law of abstinence binds person from the completion of their 14th birthday throughout life.  Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Monday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. But it doesn’t forbid use of eggs and products of milk. Permissible are soups flavored with meat. Ash Monday and Good Friday are days of total fast and abstinence under obligation.

  1. Prayer and Penance: Lent is an invitation to special prayers for the Grace of God to free us from temptation, to chase the evil spirit and get the mercy of God. “Watch and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation”( Mt.26, 41). Christian brotherhood demands us to pray for the conversion of sinners. “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Lk.23, 34). Prayer with contrition will not be rejected (Ps.51,17). Lent is a call for penance for our sins.  Traditionally Mother Church recommends her faithful to do penance as expiation for our sins. “Repent and do penance, so that we may not be perished” (Mt. 11, 20-24). Our mortification, suffering and sincere acts of penance have the salvific meaning. “Cross (suffering) has meaning when we make it our own” (Dr.Radhakrishnan).  Let us make this Great Lent fruitful by special prayers, fasting and penance for our own sanctification, as well as the conversion of sinners.
