Christian Values of Suffering

Before Christ, cross was a folly to pagans; it was a sign of disgrace. But, Christ made it a sign of grace and a means of salvation. Now let us see the Christian values in suffering:

  1. Blessings:

The life Christ suffered is the same life He offers to us. The mourning, the persecution and hunger Jesus described are given us in proportion to our perception of the love and mercy of God. Our sufferings are the blessings from Him. So, be happy in suffering, because great reward is kept for us in heaven ( Lk. 12, 32)

  1. Peace & Happiness:

When we say ‘No’ to self-seeking and self-will, i.e. when we mortify our instincts and desires which prompt us to touch, taste and handle the forbidden things, we say with St.Paul that it is no longer we who live, but Christ lives in us. There, we can enjoy the real peace and happiness with Jesus who prayed, “Not my will, but Thy will be done” (Lk.22, 42).

  1. Birth-Right:

Fulton J. Sheen says “Every human being is born to live, but Christ was born to die”. “I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”(Jn.10,11). St. Paul says that suffering is a God-given right for Christians: “By baptism, He has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but also to suffer with Him as well” (Phi. 1, 29).

4. Sign of Growth:

      According to Bernard Shaw, one of the greatest thinkers, “There is no life without sorrow, without pain and

      without suffering”. Life is mixture of sorrows and happiness. For example, a child takes pain to walk;

      people work hard to enjoy life; the religious mortify themselves by their religious vows to find happiness;

      gold is melted out in fire.

Suffering has a great value in the history of salvation. So, without cursing upon sufferings, let us accept them as God-given means for our glory in this world and in the world to come. “No crown without cross” (St.Augustine).
